Basement Finishing Systems
Today’s technology has brought us an evolutionary leap in basement finishing systems. With a minimal investment in time and money a crew can install a new finished room in your basement in days instead of weeks. Lets take a look at how they or you can accomplish this.
Many of the new basement wall systems are comprised of a “zip” wall made of a plastic that is mold and mildew resistant. These wall come in a standard length and width much like a drywall. They are immensely lighter and easier to work with though do to the nature of their design. Some will have a honeycomb construction while others are only a thick solid plastic wall. They can be bought in a variety of textures and are easily cut to size. One of the great advantages to these systems is the ability to install a lot of it by yourself. While a lot of the systems today are exclusive to a distributor and installer some searching will find you systems that can be installed by the homeowner.
One of the problems with conventional basement finishing is that you seal off access to existing plumbing and wiring. This is not so with a “zip” type wall. They can be removed with relative ease with a little planning during installation to gain access to circuit breakers or sewer lines. These walls also can be set back from your existing foundation walls and this helps to prevent water access to your new remodel. Some of these systems even claim that they have mold and mildew resistant properties.
With some of the high end finishing systems they even claim the added benefit of noise reduction. How superior this is to a drywalled room I am not sure though as I have never tested them. If what they claim is true though it would be a superior product for media rooms or maybe that added game room you have always wanted.
If you are looking for a cheap and fast way to install a new room in your basement this could be the best way to go today. With a drop ceiling and carpet or linoleum you could quite possibly be in a new room in less then a week. Whatever you decide always consult a qualified contractor for his expertise on the matter.
