Any form of home remodeling is a large and ultimately expensive task. Whenever you begin a task no matter how small scale you need to be prepared for the inevitable surprise. You may begin framing walls only to find that you have a pre existing water problem that needs fixed before you drywall or even do anymore framing. Or perhaps you remove some old work to find mold or lead paint. You never can tell what lurks behind the next corner or phase of your project. I once tore out a wall in a home to find only two 2×4’s in a thirteen foot section! This was “holding” up a second floor room as well. You can only imagine the time and rework that went into that unexpected surprise. So before you set about with any construction budget ultimately for some form of added expense. Even the best contractor or “do it yourselfer” will have some over runs.

Now on to the planning! When you decide to remodel a basement there are a few things that need assessed first. First off you need to check for any moisture or water penetration. This WILL have to be stopped before you start. Any entrance of even the smallest amount will lead to mold growth and possibly drywall failures. Once you have checked for that also look for mold and any cracks in the floor or foundation walls. Any bulging or cracking should be repaired by a professional. One of the problems that we have more recently discovered with cracking is Radon penetration. This can be checked for with a in home do it yourself kit or by a pro. Either way if you plan on being in the basement you should check because Radon is believed to be the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Then on to your rough design. Here you will measure your available area and check for any low hanging areas. This will be used to measure for your ultimate ceiling height. You will want at least 7 to 8 feet of ceiling room for code in most areas. Remember you may be adding a subfloor to which will take away from ceiling height. The subfloor is for a added layer of comfort, it helps to keep the cool of the concrete floor from coming through to your feet.

Take time now to lay out your bathroom, kitchen or any other plumbing as well. Your plumber will need to know exact areas to run his piping and you want to get this right the first time. It is often easier for a contractor and plumber to work as a team to avoid confusion.

Good luck with your basement remodel and take a look around the site for anymore questions and answers you may have.

Lets Discuss Garage Flooring

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Ive been getting a pretty steady request for some information on garage flooring. That being said I figured we would take a little diversion and discuss the topic today!

Garage Flooring can be found in various forms and functions depending on your garages use. For example a garage used mainly as a work area would not be suitable for some of the click tile applications available. Similarly a garage that is primarily used as a “hang out” spot could do much better then a painted floor.

For those of you interested in industrial types of floorings you can rarely do better then a epoxy floor. These coatings offer a cushion under your feet “in the authors opinion” and brighten up a space immensely. They also provide the added benefit of easy cleanup. A good sweep and squeegee will keep this floor bright and shiny for many years. One of the small draw backs in a industrial area though is that is can be “pierced” easily. For anything heavy like a car on jackstands special preparations must be made. These are not anything major though usually just consisting of washers or a plate added to the base of them to evenly distribute the weight. Of course this adds the problem of modified tooling perhaps not being safe so do not do this on your own!!!

Now on to the “pleasure” garage. These can be a more intricate or playful designed floor because they will not be abused on a constant basis. Things like “click-lock” flooring can be used to create giant foam pads in a black and white or almost any other color tile pattern. You could also use a roll out mat by itself or on top of this for a added layer of padding or effect. The benefits of these tiles include a ability to withstand moisture and easy replacement. Their cost can be prohibitive though.

Some Finished Basement Ideas

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Its time to remodel your basement and your looking for some ideas. While here at New Basement Remodeling we love to come up with new ideas for finished basements. From the big to the small project we are here to help you discover your projects path.

One of the funnest conversions for a basement is the media room. With the (generally) low lighting found in basements and the great sound protection it makes for a natural area for movies and entertainment. With a drop ceiling made with sound absorption it will also help to keep the rest of house, and neighbors, from having to “enjoy” your entertainment with you.

Of course you may have already determined from these characteristics that another great basement remodeling option is a music room. From music mixing to all out “garage band” playing you’ll be able to keep most things under wraps while you jam away!

Maybe you are looking for an area of seclusion for a home office. Doesn’t a quiet and peaceful area like your basement seem perfect for this? Your records and files will also have a little more burglary protection being on a lower level of your home. It is just that much further that a intruder would have to make it.

Safe or panic rooms are also a new option in basement finishing. For the security conscious a “panic” room is the perfect way to keep safe if a burglary or other violation of ones home. These can be locked down at the touch of a button keeping you protected from harm and in communication with the authorities.

Now when thinking about any of these options for your remodel be sure to evaluate your area. If you have on going water issues or electrical problems, surely you will want to get these stopped before you begin a new remodel in your basement. Check out our other posts for help in these areas. I hope you have had as much fun reading are basement finishing ideas as we have coming up with them. Good luck on your future projects!
