How Much Does It Cost to Finish a Basement

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

So you are beginning the journey on a new project and are wondering how to finance it. The first thing you are probably wondering is how much does it cost to finish a basement? As I am sure you are finding out this is a greatly varied cost that can be hard to peg down exactly.

As a general guide you need to know that the average cost per square foot in basement remodeling is around (and this is a estimated average) four hundred dollars. With this information you can now take the cost and multiply it by the square footage of the area you plan on remodeling. Now know that if you have a more recent estimate on contract costs and materials that this will give you a very close final cost. So the best way to figure out the cost of a finished basement is to call in some local contractors for quotes. Even if you do not want them to come in you can ask over the phone what they are averaging in your area for costs per square foot. They should have this information readily available and if they dont at the least it will help you weed out the good contractors from the bad.

Now before you go plugging along with our little formula and your general numbers you need to decide how custom this basement remodel will be. If you are planning on doing most of the work yourself and using basic products that are easily available you may be able to significantly lower your costs! This could result it a average cost of closer to two or three hundred dollars a square foot. Over a fifteen hundred square foot remodel this could save you $150,000!!

These figures all are averaged on the cost per square foot to finish a basement by experienced contractors. On average even the most basically skilled homeowner will find a way to chip in during their remodel. With this in mind I would say that a economical remodel ,with help from the homeowner and the always needed contractor, could come in as little as forty to fifty thousand dollars or perhaps even slightly less if you install a basement finishing system . Still a big chunk of change I know but worth every penny in added space and value in your home!

How To Choose The Best Carpet Pad For Your Basement Room

Friday, January 29th, 2010

When it come to chosing the best carpet pad you really need to become educated and make the best decision possible. This is because this decision will affect 1) the initial cost of your carpeting, and 2) how long your carpet will last. Carpet is not cheap, even if you go with the cheap stuff, so making it last as long as possible is a definite must-do.

The first thing you need to ask yourself when it comes to purchasing carpet pads is what type of pad your floor will require. Common types of padding include felt pads, rubber pads, and urethane pads. Each type of padding has it’s advantages and disadvantages, so make sure you go over those characteristics with the salesmen before you make your decision.

Second, you need to decide if you want to purchase carpet padding that is already attached to the carpet. While this can reduce the overall cost of the carpet, it’s important to make sure you don’t just look at the cost savings and that you look at the quality of the carpet pad as well. Remember, a high quality pad underneath your carpet will add to the life of the carpet. This is true because a good pad will reduce the pressure that is created on the backing and yarn from walking on the carpet daily. Reduced pressure will equal longer life and reduced wear and tear overall, thus saving you money in the long run.

Third, you need to determine the carpet pads thickness. Generally speaking a thicker carpet pad is not always better–it really does matter what you plan on doing and where you plan on putting the pad. A thinner pad can have a tendency to look older much quicker, but is easy to stretch carpet over. A thicker pad makes it difficult to stretch the carpet over, and if the padding is too thick then the carpet will have a tendency to ripple over time, which you do not want in any remodel!

Basement Media

Basement Media

There are many different options for basement media in a modern media room. These could range from a kids computer and gaming center to a family game room. Perhaps you are looking to convert your basement into a place to watch the football games and drink a cold one. Some people may even wish to make there basement into a media production room. The sky and your budget are the limits when it comes to the design.

When planning your new media room in your basement take the time to lay out your electrical plans carefully. Modern hardware can be seamlessly installed into the walls for all of your broadband and television hookups. If you plan this all now there will be no need for unsightly cables and the like around your new family room. Broadband and tv cables are a straight forward installation that just requires you to get them from point a to b. You will want to route them cleanly in the walls where they can be mounted and referenced for the future. If you are getting into a project that will involve greater cable runs and maybe fiber optics it is best to leave it to trained and qualified technicians. They will have the proper equipment to test all of your new hardware before you seal it into the walls.

For those of you looking for a party atmosphere you may wish to install a tap system. This is also very straight forward in a plumbing sense. Keep your hoses clean and make sure they are not rubbing or pinched during there installation. Place the keg and CO2 system in a designated area that will be easy to access and service when needed. The tap or taps can be placed in any spot in your plumbing system. Make sure that you leave clean out drains and a access to the end of the lines for a water hookup and flushing out point. This setup could also be used for someone wanting a soda dispensing machine in their new party room.
