First Steps in Basement Remodeling.

December 16th, 2009 by Rob B

So you have decided to remodel your basement but you do not know where to start or the cost to finish your basement. Here is the dummy’s guide to basement remodeling and home improvement. Among the first steps in your new project you must ascertain the feasibility of converting your basement into a living area. Begin by inspecting the area for any unwanted water or dampness seeping through your walls or floor. Anything found must be corrected now before you begin your remodel or it will result in damage to your newly constructed walls and flooring. While you are inspecting for the water also look for any mold or mildew and make a note of the locations for all of the problem areas. It should be noted that your inspection needs to be done during a “wet season” or after a decent rainfall.

Once you have ascertained the extent of your water problems, if any, the next thing to do is begin correcting them. Any mold and mildew should be cleaned with a bleach and water mixture and if possible a mold killing product such as those sold at your local home improvement centers. I would advise wearing a mask, gloves, and safety glasses while you are cleaning  with any of aforementioned products. The area should also be well ventilated to prevent any irritations or injuries. Now to begin your water correction begin by going outside your home and checking for any blocked gutters or rainspouts. Any water removal system on your house needs to be performing correctly before you can get a proper view of your true problems. If anything is found to be blocking your gutters by all means clean them! The next step is to check for proper gradients around your house. Look for any water pooling near your home or any cement, brick,or wooden patios or slabs that may be settling towards your home. These issues MUST be repaired before moving on.  Assess your level of expertise in the area and fix all gradient problems around the home. Major problems may be corrected with a french drain system installed by a professional in any of your problem areas. Now check the foundation of your home for any cracking or damage. Have these repaired and inspected by a qualified technician also. If nothing is found wrong outside continue with the inspection back in your basement. Once inside begin by looking for any leaking plumbing or stopped drains in the area of the intruding water. If any are found have them repaired or replaced now before your remodel begins. If all seems well we can begin installing a waterproofing product to seal the area from future intrusion. Please look for a step by step guide in the guide to waterproofing products post and good luck in your basement remodeling!
